Tuesday Geometry 1 had a test on probability. The students did pretty well on it, mostly regents questions to help get them prepared for the regents. Algebra II started a unit on Logic which confused a lot of the students because of all the logic symbols and what makes statements true or false. It's something that will work out with some drilling and some studying. Pre Calc had a daily quiz and started the unit review for the test on thursday.
Wednesday I started teaching. I took over the Geometry I class and teaching on a block schedule is strange. The block schedule I'm used to is seeing one set of students one day and a second set of students on the second day. But for this block schedule it's three classes that we see everyday, which is sweet. So we started with solving quadratic equations which the students were able to get really quickly. Which was great. it's always a good feeling when the students understand what your teaching. Algebra II worked on disjunctions and conjunctions and reviewed their last unit test. Some students were still confused with the differences between "and" and "or" but by the end of the period they were starting to get a hang of it. Pre Calc went over the review sheet for their unit test and worked out problems on the board to help students who were having trouble with certain problems. When ever a student goes to the board they get extra class participation points. Every 5 weeks is the end of a marking period and at the end of Jan is the end of the semester.
Thursday we started the Pythagorean Theorem in Geometry I. The students pretty much already knew the theorem and what we were doing was pretty much practice and applying it to word problems mostly. Splitting up rectangles and triangles and squares into triangles with right angles. Algebra II worked some more on logic with conditionals and bi-conditionals. Again some students had some trouble keeping these two straight along with the others they had been learning previous to today. But with some drills and practice they were starting to understand it. Pre Calc had their unit test.
Friday was halloween and oh what fun. During Geometry I all of the seniors (who were dressed up) paraded into our classroom and threw candy at all the students. some of the costumes were pretty impressive and others were kind of lame, but over all they were really good. We started special right triangles:: 30-60-90 and 45-45-90. The students had some trouble remembering the ratios even with the hints and helps and several examples that we went over. Algebra II had a quiz on logic with a truth table as a bonus. Then they went over contrapositives and more examples. Pre Calc reviewed their test and started the review sheet for their mid term which will be next week.
Today (monday) we started off with a quiz in Geometry I. The students did awesome on the quiz! the lowest grade was a 50/100 and the class average was an 82!!! It is such an awesome feeling knowing the students are understanding what and how i'm teaching them. Algebra II had a review for their logic test that they have tomorrow. Pre Calc had midterm review again for their midterm on Thursday.
Wednesday I take over Algebra II for their unit on transformations which should be a lot of fun, I kind of want to bring in songs and stuff to get their attention, could be fun!
