So the quiz on tuesday went well. We started off the period talking about thinklink and the student's 5 week folders. The 5 week folders are given out every 5 weeks. We gave ours out on Tuesday. In the five week folder are all the graded assignments from the first 5 weeks of school. These five weeks we had two quizzes, one in class and one take home, a test, a notebook check, and a class participation grade. Only 5 grades for the first 5 quarters which isn't a whole lot of grades which was hard for some students who had trouble with a quiz or test their grades weren't great. So after talking about thinklink and the five week folders we went onto the quiz. The kids did pretty well on the quiz not a lot of kids failed which is good.
Wednesday we did thinklink. Thinklink is a Discovery Channel sponsored test. It's 34 questions that are suppose to predict the student's outcome on the state test. The kids didn't seem to enjoy sitting in front of a computer for 40 min taking a test. Some of them finished fairly quickly and were able to get onto a different website called study island that helps students study and work on things they need help on by playing games that are subject based. A lot of the kids liked this better since they were playing games and having fun.
Thursday we didn't have school but it was staff development day. So there was a book, Teach with your strengths: How great teachers inspire their students that was given out. Some people had gotten it before thursday and some of us got it that morning. When we got our books we took a quick 35 minute quiz type deal that pulled out our strengths. Out of 34 different strengths it pulled out your top 5. My top five are: Adaptability, Strategic, Relator, Command, Ideation. It was really cool to learn what my strengths are and that I should be focusing on those rather then my weaknesses. If you want to learn what you are get the book! there are also different books that aren't about teaching.
Friday was interesting. Since the kids had off from school thursday and didn't have school on monday we didn't want to teach a whole lot since we knew the kids weren't going to pay attention or want to learn. So we spent the day reviewing. I had 7 envelops with 7 questions in them and had the kids pass them around the classroom and work as a table to get the correct answer and work on their PEMDAS skills. The kids seemed to have a good time and they worked well together.
Today, Tuesday, we changed everyone's seats. Every period got new seats and it seemed to work pretty well. We did some plus questions, reviewed the quiz from last week. Then we started the actual learning part of class with asking for a definition of key words. then we went over different key words for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and equals. We started working on the homework by identifying the key words in the expressions or equations and re-writing them from words to numbers. The kids got into it and were understanding it. There was a lot of class participation which is always a good thing!
A week and half left before seminar and moving to the high school =)
